ProjectsDiversity report – 2005 to 2006 Project aims:
To
ensure GROW meets the needs of the diverse communities of Rotherham. Highlights of the year: The last twelve months have been busy and challenging. The project has worked hard to ensure that its service user’s voice and concerns are heard both within the organisation and in the wider community. This report includes the work of the dedicated asylum seeker and refugee project that is managed by the Diversity project. Workers attended the Yorkshire and Humberside Consortium for Asylum Seekers and Refugees conference in Goole. This was an important event in terms of taking local issues to a region level, which hopefully will have an impact nationally. This year, we have continued to provide practical, emotional and personal support to asylum seekers and refugees via drop in sessions at Eastwood Mission Church. The Diversity project achieved and in some cases exceeded all of its outputs and milestones. The project worked with: · 85 women · 71 took up formal or informal training opportunities provided by this project · 5 went onto volunteering opportunities · 2 went into employment · 58 women progressed onto other opportunities e.g. joined other community groups. The project held a number of events to celebrate its work: · 25 women took part in Holi celebration (Festival of colour) · 8 women visited a Hindu temple in Leicester · The project took part in Rotherham’s Diversity Festival and Refugee Week celebrations The year ahead Diversity is multi faceted and to make a real difference to the organisation and the community time must be spent embedding diversity into practice. This year has concentrated on equality around ethnicity and next year intends to dedicate time looking at disability. Of course the coming year will bring its own opportunities and challenges but networks will be developed and maintained to respond to the many issues that will undoubtedly be raised. Project links:
